The Sherpa Staircase to Vasskartind
Sherpa Staircase to Vasskartind
Vasskartind (1,140 meters above sea level), often referred to as Andørja’s version of the Matterhorn, is now getting its very own Sherpa staircase. The project began in 2021 and is expected to be completed by 2027 – but parts of the trail are already accessible.
Sherpa stairs are built by Nepalese Sherpas, who specialize in constructing trails in steep terrain. This ensures safe access for hikers while preventing erosion and wear on the natural landscape.
Support & Contributions
So far, more than NOK 4 million has been raised for the project, including around NOK 485,000 through the sale of individual steps. Several companies have contributed financially, including Nordkraft, Sparebank 68° Nord, SpareBank 1 Nord-Norge, and Nordenfjelske Bykreditts Stiftelse.
Promoting Public Health & Local Pride
The goal of the Sherpa staircase is to make Vasskartind more accessible, promote physical activity, and help establish Andørja as an even more attractive travel destination.
Along the way to the summit, you’ll find scenic rest spots like Aksla, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
